Positive Psychology

The word “Psychology” is commonly associated with mental health. So if I am getting help through psychology, there must be something off balance with my mental health, right? Now most of us will admit that we are not perfectly balanced all the time. Does that mean there’s something wrong with most of us?

THIS is exactly where “Positive Psychology” comes in. Positive Psychology is the scientific study of what makes us who we are. The strengths and virtues that enable us as individuals and communities to thrive. Positive Psychology is founded on the belief that people want to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives, to cultivate what is best within themselves, and to enhance their experiences of love, work, and play.

To put it simply it is a study of what is “Right” with us and working with those strengths. “Positive Psychology” is not about focussing on what’s “Wrong” with us and trying to eliminate or fix that part of us.

VIA Character Strengths Are “The Backbone Of Positive Psychology”

Dr. Neal Mayerson, a clinical psychologist, connected with Dr. Martin Seligman, a renowned researcher, scholar, and author to explore Positive Psychology.  As they used social science to explore what is best about human beings, they discovered that a key construct in the science of Positive Psychology is character; specifically, the characteristics that define what’s best about people. Through their collaboration and leadership,Dr. Seligman and Dr. Chris Peterson created the VIA Classification of Character Strengths, the “backbone of Positive Psychology”.

Based on this new ground breaking research a personal strengths test,was designed specifically to measure these 24 character strengths in individuals. Since its inception in 2001, till this day, the VIA Survey has been offered, for free so that every individual in the world can “know their 24” and use this information to lead happier, thriving lives.
