NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS

NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS !!

“New year resolutions are made to be broken” is the most commonly used cliché to cover-up a failed attempt to transform….

Statistics reveal that 80% of the NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS FAIL!!

And yet, the reasons we make new year’s resolutions are very genuine
1) The need to improve as an individual is deep-rooted in human psyche
2) We have the capacity to identify the aspects of our personality that need to be strengthened
3) We are “naturally creative, resourceful, and whole.”

So why DO so many resolutions fail?… Actually, resolutions don’t fail. The WILL to apply ourselves to the resolution fails.

Transformations is a methodological process when understood and practiced scientifically, has to give results.

There is no magic that will transform us …
We have to do it ourselves !!

Scientific research validates that for any resolution to be successful there are 2 character strengths that need to be invoked:

  • Perseverance
  •  Self Regulation.

Perseverance involves the deliberate continuation of a goal-directed action despite the presence of challenges, difficulties, and discouragement. There are two aspects of perseverance. It requires both effort for a task and duration to keep the task up.

Here is a simple and small exercise that will help boost perseverance.

  • Set five small goals weekly. Break them into practical steps, accomplish them on time, and monitor your progress from week to week.
  • Keep a checklist of things to do and regularly update it.
  • Select a role-model who exemplifies perseverance and determine how you can follow her/ his footsteps.

Self-Regulation

Self-Regulation can be viewed as a resource that can be depleted and fatigued. A useful metaphor can be that self-regulation acts like a muscle, which can be exhausted through over-exertion or strengthened through regular practice.

  • Next time you get upset, make a conscious effort to control your emotions and focus on positive attributes.
  • Set goals to improve your everyday living (e.g., room cleaning, laundry, doing dishes, cleaning your desk) and make sure you complete the tasks.
  • Pay close attentions to your biological clock. Do your most important tasks when you are most alert.
